USM Alger beat Zamalek on penalties for a second title
USM Alger held their nerve through an 8–7 penalty shootout in Cairo, coming back from a 1–0 second-leg defeat to Zamalek to win the CAF Confederation Cup 1–1 on aggregate for a second continental crown.
Khaldi's stoppage-time penalty wins leg one
The first leg at the Stade du 5 Juillet 1962 in Algiers went right to the wire on May 9, with Ahmed Khaldi converting a penalty in the eighth minute of stoppage time to hand USM Alger a 1–0 advantage to take to Cairo.
Zamalek level it in Cairo
Zamalek responded in the second leg on May 16, winning 1–0 on the night to level the tie at 1–1 on aggregate and send the final to a penalty shootout in front of their own supporters.
Shehata's miss, then Likonza seals it
Both sides converted their first seven spot-kicks before stand-in Zamalek captain Mohamed Shehata blazed his effort over the bar. Congolese substitute Glody Likonza kept his composure to fire the winning penalty into the left corner, despite Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Awad getting a hand to it, sealing an 8–7 shootout win.
A second Confederation Cup crown
It's USM Alger's second CAF Confederation Cup title, adding another piece of continental silverware for Algerian club football on a dramatic night in Cairo.
