Mamelodi Sundowns win it back, edge AS FAR on aggregate
Teboho Mokoena's stunning first-half stoppage-time strike cancelled out a Mohamed Hrimat penalty in Rabat, sealing a 2–1 aggregate win over Morocco's AS FAR and a second CAF Champions League title for Mamelodi Sundowns.
Modiba's free-kick puts Sundowns in control
The first leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria went Sundowns' way on May 17, with Aubrey Modiba curling in a stunning free-kick for the only goal of the night, giving the South African champions a slender 1–0 cushion to take into Morocco.
Hrimat penalty, then Mokoena's screamer
Back at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on May 24, Mohamed Hrimat gave AS FAR hope from the penalty spot in the 40th minute to level the tie on the night. Sundowns responded almost immediately — Teboho Mokoena unleashed a first-time strike from inside the box in first-half stoppage time that crashed in off the crossbar, restoring Sundowns' aggregate lead at a crucial moment.
Williams saves the day
Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced the moment of the final in the second half, diving to save a second Hrimat penalty and deny AS FAR a route back into the tie. The 1–1 second-leg draw was enough to see Sundowns home 2–1 on aggregate.
A second continental crown
It's Mamelodi Sundowns' second CAF Champions League title, adding to their maiden triumph back in 2016 and confirming their status as the dominant force in South African and continental club football.
