Trabzonspor confirm talks are underway
Trabzonspor have confirmed in a club statement that they have begun negotiations to sign Mohamed Salah, with the 34-year-old set to arrive in Istanbul on Wednesday. "The player is planned to reach Trabzon in the evening of the same day," the club said, adding that details of a welcome programme in Trabzon would be shared through its official channels. It is the clearest signal yet that a deal for the free agent is close to being finalised.
Nine years, and a trophy case, at Anfield
Salah left Liverpool at the end of last season after joining from Roma in June 2017. During his nine-year spell he won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, an FA Cup, two EFL Cups and a Community Shield. He took the Premier League Golden Boot four times and was named the PFA Player of the Year three times, in 2018, 2022 and 2025. Across 442 appearances he scored 257 goals and set up a further 120 — a return that makes him one of the most productive players in the competition's history.
The Black Sea Storm
Nicknamed the Black Sea Storm, Trabzonspor are one of only six clubs to have won the Turkish Süper Lig, with seven titles in total — six of them between 1976 and 1984. Their most recent championship, in 2022, ended a 38-year wait for the title. Based in the north-eastern city of Trabzon, the club had already emerged as the leading suitor for Salah's signature ahead of fellow Süper Lig side Besiktas.
A summer that ended in Atlanta
Salah's close season included a run to the World Cup last 16 with Egypt, who lost 3-2 to eventual finalists Argentina after twice coming from behind.
