Real Madrid strike £120m deal

Real Madrid have agreed a deal worth up to £120 million (€140 million) with RB Leipzig for winger Yan Diomande.

The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international is set to sign a seven-year contract running until the summer of 2033, in what would rank among the biggest fees ever paid for an African player.

Real Madrid's own bid rejected first

Real Madrid had an opening £85.4 million (€100 million) bid turned down by Leipzig, who held out for a far bigger fee before finally accepting the improved £120 million offer.

PSG pull out, Liverpool priced out

Diomande had been strongly linked with Paris Saint-Germain for much of the summer, with reports suggesting he had personal terms agreed with the French club. PSG have since withdrawn from the race, saying the fee and salary demands were "completely disproportionate and distortive."

Liverpool also held an interest but were unwilling to go beyond around £85 million, with Arsenal and Manchester City also credited with monitoring the winger.

Rookie of the year in Bundesliga breakout season

Diomande joined Leipzig from Leganés in July 2025 before an explosive first season, scoring 12 goals and adding eight assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances to be named the division's Rookie of the Season for 2025-26.

Starred at the World Cup

The teenager was a standout for Ivory Coast at the 2026 World Cup, starting in their group-stage win over Ecuador and playing a key role as Les Éléphants reached the knockout stage for the first time in the nation's history.

What's next

The move is expected to be finalised in the coming days pending a medical, with Real Madrid still to confirm the transfer officially. Diomande would become one of several new arrivals under Jose Mourinho this summer as the club continue rebuilding their squad.
