Chelsea Complete Signing of Danny Welbeck From Brighton
Xabi Alonso turns to a 35-year-old with a point to prove, bringing in Danny Welbeck to add Premier League-winning experience to one of the youngest squads in the league.
The deal
Chelsea have completed the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton for an undisclosed fee, with the 35-year-old penning a contract through 2028. Welbeck had just a year left on his Amex Stadium deal and posted his best Premier League return last season — 13 goals and an assist in 37 appearances.
A striking U-turn
The move is a departure from Chelsea's usual approach since the BlueCo takeover in 2022, which has prioritised players under 25. It's the first time the club have paid a fee for a player over 26 since signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona four years ago. Chelsea's other four senior strikers average just 23 years old, with a combined 269 Premier League appearances between them.
"Immense pride"
Welbeck said the move already feels like home. "When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it's something that fills you with such immense pride," he said. "I'm really honoured to come to a club of this stature at what feels like a really exciting time. I know a few of the boys already, and I've had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection."
Part of a bigger plan
The signing follows Chelsea's club-record £117m deal for Morgan Rogers and the arrival of defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, and comes as the club are also closing in on Jordan Henderson. Sky Sports' Gary Neville said the experience matters as much off the pitch as on it: "Putting in Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck who know how to win Premier League titles, their jobs will be as much off the pitch as it will be on it. They're still good players who can contribute 25-35 games a season, but they will make sure the young players turn up every single day and give their all."
The Brighton pipeline
Welbeck follows several Brighton staff members to Stamford Bridge, including sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Sam Jewell, who've both made the same move over the past four years.
