Manchester United agree £50m deal for Chelsea's Andrey Santos
Manchester United have completed a £50m signing of Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, closing out a chase for midfield reinforcements after missing out on two other targets earlier in the window.
For much of the summer, Manchester United's search for a new midfielder had felt like a story of near-misses. Elliot Anderson slipped away, so did Mateus Fernandes, and with Casemiro gone and Manuel Ugarte sidelined by injury, Michael Carrick's rebuild had a gap he couldn't leave unfilled. Andrey Santos became the answer.
Chelsea had long viewed Santos as one of their most promising young midfielders, a physical, ball-winning presence who had impressed in loan spells and pushed for minutes at Stamford Bridge. But with Chelsea's midfield options stacked and a fee on the table that suited both sides, the Blues agreed to let him go — insisting on a 10% sell-on clause that lets them share in any future profit if United later cash in.
The agreed fee is £48m, with a further £2m available in add-ons, taking the total package to around £50m. Santos has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, becoming the first permanent signing of the Michael Carrick era.
For United, the fee closes out a frustrating chase for reinforcements. A separate move for Santos's compatriot Éderson from Atalanta, once seen as a companion signing for the midfield, has since collapsed after follow-up medical tests flagged concerns over a knee injury — leaving Santos as United's headline midfield addition of the summer heading into the new campaign.
