PSG retain the Super Cup with 2-1 win

Paris Saint-Germain beat Aston Villa 2-1 at the Red Bull Arena to win the UEFA Super Cup for the second year running, opening Europe's new season with more silverware for the reigning Champions League holders.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put PSG ahead in the 20th minute, latching onto a pass from Désiré Doué inside the box before cutting inside and driving a shot past goalkeeper Marco Bizot. Villa responded well and drew level right before half-time through 17-year-old striker Brian Madjo, who finished first-time to become one of the youngest scorers in the competition's history.

Doué's late strike settles a tight contest

Despite Villa pushing Madjo forward for much of the game — he was replaced by Tammy Abraham in the 72nd minute — it was PSG who found the breakthrough. Doué scored what proved to be the winner in the 61st minute, running onto a through ball from France team-mate Ousmane Dembele and finishing into the side netting with his left foot.

PSG dominated possession for long spells, but Villa kept probing and finished the night with more shots on goal, 15 to PSG's 12, as they pushed for a leveller that never came.

Back-to-back champions

Having also won the 2024-25 Champions League, PSG beat Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in last year's Super Cup after a late comeback. Retaining the trophy this year makes them just the third club in the competition's history to win it in consecutive seasons, after AC Milan (1989, 1990) and Real Madrid (2016, 2017).
