Arsenal edge Chelsea as Everton snatch late leveler

Isak sets the tone as Liverpool open the weekend

Liverpool got the weekend underway on Friday night with a comfortable 2-0 win at Ipswich Town, and it took Alexander Isak just nine minutes to settle it. The Swedish striker opened the scoring in the sixth minute and doubled his tally three minutes later, giving Liverpool an early two-goal cushion they never looked like surrendering at Portman Road.

Goals shared out across a busy Saturday

Saturday's seven-match slate produced goals at both ends of the table. Crystal Palace came from behind at Fulham to win 3-2, with Tyrick Mitchell scoring twice either side of half-time before Ben Chilwell's 77th-minute strike settled it, overturning an early Fulham lead built by Joshua King and César Palacios.

Manchester City edged past newly-promoted Coventry City 1-0 courtesy of an Erling Haaland finish just after the half-hour mark, while Newcastle United and Bournemouth shared four goals in a 2-2 draw at St James' Park — Newcastle twice pulled level, through Harvey Barnes and a stoppage-bound Ramsey strike, only for Bournemouth's Marcus Tavernier and a Malick Thiaw own goal to keep pace.

Elsewhere, Brentford and Sunderland shared the points at 1-1, with Sunderland's Le Fée converting a penalty in the 82nd minute to cancel out Vitaly Janelt's earlier goal. Brighton and Leeds United also finished level at 1-1, and Hull City's 0-0 draw with Aston Villa was matched by another stalemate between Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal survive an early scare to see off Chelsea

Sunday's headline fixture at the Emirates lived up to its billing. Chelsea shocked the home crowd inside two minutes when Morgan Rogers finished early to give the visitors a surprise lead, and Pedro Neto came agonizingly close to a second when his effort cannoned back off the woodwork right before the interval, as Chelsea threatened to make it a miserable afternoon for the hosts.

Arsenal responded before the break through Kai Havertz, leveling things at 1-1 at half-time, and the German was at the heart of the winner too. Just after the hour mark, Havertz's dummy on the edge of the box wrongfooted Chelsea's defense, and Martin Ødegaard ran onto the loose ball — set up by a driving run from Christos Tzolis down the left — to fire Arsenal 2-1 in front in the 50th minute.

Both managers rang the changes as the game opened up: Chelsea brought on Malo Gusto and Pep Chavarria for Romeo Lavia and Jorrel Hato, while Arsenal introduced Piero Hincapié and Martín Zubimendi, before later withdrawing both goal-scoring heroes, Havertz and Ødegaard, for Mikel Merino and Viktor Gyökeres to see out the closing stages. Arsenal held on for a 2-1 win that keeps their unbeaten start to the season intact and hands Chelsea a first defeat under Xabi Alonso.

Everton deny Manchester United in stoppage time

At Goodison Park, Manchester United looked to have done enough to leave Merseyside with all three points after Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock just after half-time and Benjamin Šeško added a second in the 88th minute. But Everton refused to fold: Tyrique George pulled one back before Šeško's goal had even settled, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles produced a stunning leveler in the sixth minute of stoppage time to snatch a 2-2 draw and deny United a second win of the weekend.
