City Crush 10-Man Liverpool At Anfield

Manchester City beat 10-man Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield in their first match since being found guilty of breaching the Premier League's financial rules, moving three points clear at the top of the table.

City silence a hostile Anfield

Manchester City beat Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday, a day that began with the visitors facing a hostile reception on Merseyside. It was City's first game since the Premier League announced on 29 September that an independent commission had found the club guilty of breaching its financial rules, a verdict City deny and say they will appeal.

The City players were booed during their warm-up and again before kick-off, and banners aimed at the club were displayed around the ground. Enzo Maresca's side showed little sign of being affected.

Gravenberch red card changes the game

The match was goalless at half-time and turned shortly after the hour. Ryan Gravenberch was shown a second yellow card in the 62nd minute for a foul on Jeremy Doku, leaving Liverpool with 10 men.

Erling Haaland broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, and Doku, who had come on as a substitute, doubled the lead three minutes later with a curling shot into the top corner.

Cherki completes the win

Rayan Cherki added the third in the 78th minute, playing a one-two with Joško Gvardiol before slotting the ball past Alisson Becker.

City top, Liverpool nine points back

The win keeps City as the only side with a perfect start to the Premier League season, with six wins from six, and leaves them three points clear of Arsenal at the top.

For Andoni Iraola's Liverpool it was the first defeat of the season, and it leaves them ninth, nine points behind City.

PSG next in the Champions League

City turn their attention to the Champions League next, where they host Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad on Wednesday 14 October in the second match of the league phase.
