Spain Stun England At Wembley
Spain came from behind to beat England 3-2 at Wembley, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring the winner after Harry Kane missed a penalty that would have put England 3-1 ahead.
Yamal punishes early Guehi error
Spain took an early lead at Wembley when Lamine Yamal capitalised on a mistake from Marc Guéhi, taking the ball off the England defender before finishing past goalkeeper James Trafford in the second minute.
England hit back before half-time. Anthony Gordon levelled in the 36th minute, finishing off a counter-attack after being picked out by Jude Bellingham, and Harry Kane put England ahead four minutes later, heading in a cross supplied by Nico O'Reilly.
Kane's penalty miss proves costly
England had the chance to extend their lead early in the second half after Jude Bellingham was fouled by Rodri inside the box, with the penalty given following a VAR review. Kane took the kick himself but lost his footing on his run-up, and his shot cannoned off the crossbar without troubling the goalkeeper.
Spain punished the miss. After O'Reilly lost possession in midfield, Dani Olmo won the ball back and released Álex Baena, who drove a finish in from the edge of the area to make it 2-2 in the 60th minute. Fourteen minutes later, Baena turned provider himself, threading a pass into the box for substitute Mikel Oyarzabal, who guided the ball past Trafford to complete Spain's turnaround.
Spain's unbeaten run continues
The win kept Spain unbeaten in their last 39 matches and top of Group A3, which also contains Croatia and the Czech Republic. It is the second time in as many major tournaments that Oyarzabal has scored a late, decisive goal against England, following his extra-time winner in the Euro 2024 final.
England remain without a win over Spain in their last several meetings and will look to respond when the group resumes next month.
