Mbappé's hat-trick seals a perfect Bernabéu return for Mourinho

José Mourinho returned to the Bernabéu in style as Kylian Mbappé scored a hat-trick to help Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad 4-1 in La Liga on Wednesday night.

Two wins from two is a perfect start to the season, and this victory was far more convincing than the 2-1 win at Espanyol last weekend.

Mbappé produced three brilliant finishes, with Vinicius Jr also getting on the scoresheet, in front of a Bernabéu crowd eager to witness the return of the coach who won three domestic titles there over a decade ago, managing 127 wins from 178 matches in charge between 2010 and 2013.

Real Sociedad, however, were determined to spoil the party and made life difficult for the hosts for long spells of the game.

Sociedad hit back before Real Madrid pull clear

Real Madrid broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when Mbappé collected a pass from Federico Valverde inside the box and drove a left-footed shot into the corner of the net.

Real Sociedad responded well and were level just four minutes later, Luka Sucic turning in a loose ball after it fell to him in the box following a rebound off a Job Ochieng effort.

Real Madrid regained the lead in the 60th minute, Mbappé finishing low into the corner after a move that started with Valverde and involved Jude Bellingham. Vinicius Jr then made it 3-1 in the 68th minute, tapping in after Bellingham won the ball back high up the pitch and squared it to him in front of goal.

Mbappé completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute, latching onto a pass from Vinicius Jr that split the Real Sociedad defence before finishing low into the corner to make it 4-1.

Mourinho: "He's very involved in the game"

Mourinho was full of praise for Mbappé after full-time, more than 13 years on from his last home match in charge of Real Madrid.

"He's a historical player, his World Cup record will remain forever," said Mourinho.

"He's very hungry to make history at Real Madrid too. He isn't just a goalscorer, he doesn't wait for the whole team to create and then just score.

"He's very involved in the game. When you coach elite players like this, you don't need to coach them as individuals. You need to coach the team as a whole."

Real Madrid are back in action at the Bernabéu on Sunday, hosting Málaga in their third league match in four days.
