Haaland's Contested Winner Gives 10-Man City Derby Victory Over United
Phil Foden was sent off in the first half for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes, but Erling Haaland's second-half goal, awarded despite an offside VAR review, gave Manchester City a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.
Foden Sent Off As A Quiet Derby Explodes Into Life
The 199th Manchester derby was goalless and largely uneventful until the 23rd minute, when Phil Foden was shown a red card for kicking out at United captain Bruno Fernandes after Fernandes had kicked the ball into him. Replays showed Fernandes striking Foden first, but referee and VAR judged Foden's response, described on Sky Sports' broadcast as a two-footed kick towards Fernandes' midriff, to have crossed the line into violent conduct. The decision reduced City to 10 men for the remainder of the match and dominated discussion of the game's opening period.
United Hit The Post Twice But Can't Make The Extra Man Count
Despite the numerical advantage, United struggled to turn control of the game into clear chances. Marcus Rashford saw a 28-yard free-kick come back off the post in first-half stoppage time, and Kobbie Mainoo curled an effort against the post early in the second half after beating goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Neither rebound could be converted, and City survived the pressure with their numerical disadvantage intact.
Haaland's Goal Stands Despite An Offside Review
City took the lead in the 60th minute when Erling Haaland tapped in at the back post, though the goal was initially flagged for offside. Semi-automated offside technology cleared Haaland himself, but Enzo Fernandez, who was in an offside position attacking the same delivery, was adjudged not to have interfered with play, and the goal was allowed to stand after a VAR check. The decision was questioned by pundits on Sky Sports' broadcast, including Gary Neville, given Fernandez's proximity to the ball as it was played across the box. Enzo Fernandez then hit the post himself in the 68th minute, denied by a save from United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, before Donnarumma produced a stoppage-time save to deny Bryan Mbeumo a leveller in the game's final moments, sealing City's win.
