Brighton Come Back To Dump Manchester United Out Of Carabao Cup
Brighton recovered from two goals down to beat Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford and reach the Carabao Cup fourth round.
United race into early lead
Manchester United made a fast start at Old Trafford, but Brighton mounted a second-half comeback to win 3-2 and knock the hosts out of the Carabao Cup.
Shea Lacey scored his first senior goal for United on his first start, putting the hosts ahead in the eighth minute. Mason Mount doubled the lead two minutes later when he followed up after Marcus Rashford’s effort had been stopped by Jason Steele.
Brighton found a way back just before half-time. Charalampos Kostoulas reduced the deficit in first-half stoppage time, giving the visitors momentum going into the break.
Brighton complete turnaround
Pascal Groß levelled for Brighton in the 65th minute after controlling Luka Vušković’s header and finishing from close range.
The Seagulls completed the comeback four minutes later when substitute Maxim De Cuyper converted after Kostoulas drove forward and created the opening.
United pushed for an equaliser, with Michael Carrick introducing captain Bruno Fernandes in the closing stages. Jason Steele denied Marcus Rashford, while Karl Darlow stopped Diego Gómez from adding a fourth for Brighton.
Another cup disappointment
The defeat means Manchester United have exited the Carabao Cup in the third round for a second successive season.
It was also the first time United had lost a home match after leading by two goals since their 3-2 defeat to Tottenham in November 1976. Brighton progress to the fourth round.
