Haaland Double Gives Man City Winning Start Over Porto
Erling Haaland scored either side of a string of Diogo Costa saves as Enzo Maresca's Manchester City began their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win in Portugal.
Haaland Breaks The Deadlock After The Break
Manchester City began their 2026-27 Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win at Porto, with Erling Haaland scoring both goals at the Estadio do Dragao. City dominated large parts of the first half but were repeatedly denied by Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, who made a string of saves, including a fine double stop, to keep the scores level at the break. Haaland finally broke through two minutes into the second half, heading in a cross from Enzo Fernandez.
Late Second Goal Seals The Points
Porto pushed forward after falling behind, and Gianluigi Donnarumma had a nervy spell in the City goal, rescued by the offside flag after rushing out to meet Pepe, then almost gifting Porto a way back in when William Gomes blocked his clearance and the ball narrowly missed the target. City made sure of the win in stoppage time when Haaland slotted home a cross from Rayan Ait-Nouri, a goal that also made him City's third-highest goalscorer of all time on 167 goals and moved him to 59 Champions League goals from 59 appearances in the competition.
A Big-Money Debut For Bouaddi
The win came in Enzo Maresca's first Champions League match in charge of City since replacing Pep Guardiola, following a summer in which the club spent a reported 460 million pounds on new signings. Among them was teenage midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, who made his first City start following a 100 million euro move from Lille and combined well with Phil Foden in the build-up to several first-half chances.
