Chelsea Confirm Signing of Jordan Henderson Following Brentford Exit
The 36-year-old joins on a free transfer and signs a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge, completing a second experienced addition for Xabi Alonso's squad in the same window alongside Danny Welbeck.
The deal
Chelsea have confirmed the signing of England midfielder Jordan Henderson. The 36-year-old joins on a free transfer having left Brentford by mutual consent, and has signed a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge.
"A huge opportunity I couldn't turn down"
Henderson said the move was one he had to take. "Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn't turn down," he said. "I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction. For me, it's about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I'm very excited to get going."
Two veterans in one window
The Blues were keen to add experience to Alonso's squad this summer and have now brought in Henderson and Welbeck, 35, within days of each other. Chelsea have not featured a player over 30 in two years and had not paid a fee for one in four, making the shift toward experienced signings a deliberate change in direction from the club's BlueCo-era transfer policy.
The Leverkusen blueprint
The approach echoes what Alonso built at Bayer Leverkusen, where he brought in over-30s Granit Xhaka and Jonas Hofmann and a 27-year-old Alex Grimaldo to add leadership to a young, talented squad that had produced talent but not trophies, before leading them to an invincible double-winning season in 2024. Sporting director Simon Rolfes spoke at the time about the need to give the team role models; Alonso appears to be applying the same lesson at Stamford Bridge.
