Real Madrid began their La Liga campaign with a 2-1 victory over Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium, with debutant Carlos Espí scoring the decisive goal in the 90th minute.
Jude Bellingham put Madrid ahead in the ninth minute, finishing after Arda Güler’s free-kick created the opportunity. The early goal gave José Mourinho’s side a positive start in his first competitive match of his second spell in charge.
Espanyol respond before the break
Espanyol recovered from the early setback and levelled the match in the 30th minute through Cala.
The equaliser changed the flow of the game, with the home side growing in confidence and ensuring Madrid could not turn their early lead into a routine victory.
Espí delivers late winner
Real Madrid pushed for a winner in the second half and found it at the end through Espí.
The debutant scored in the 90th minute to secure all three points for Madrid and give Mourinho a winning return to competitive management at the club.
Madrid leave Barcelona with a hard-fought victory, while Espanyol will take encouragement from a competitive display against one of La Liga’s leading sides.
