Michael Edwards steps down as Liverpool's CEO of football
Edwards is leaving Fenway Sports Group for a second time, having told owners last autumn he planned to go — club president Mike Gordon is expected to take on a bigger hands-on role at Anfield.
Liverpool are facing a period of behind-the-scenes upheaval after Michael Edwards stepped down as Fenway Sports Group's CEO of football. Edwards, who returned to Anfield in 2024 in a broader role following Jürgen Klopp's departure, has served his notice period and departs with roughly a year still left on his contract.
Edwards's second spell was framed partly around FSG's interest in a multi-club model — the group explored deals for around 25 other clubs, including Malaga and Bordeaux, before deciding not to buy any of them. With that wider project shelved, Edwards felt the role was not developing the way he and FSG had hoped, and having no wish to return to a straightforward sporting-director brief, he chose to move on.
FSG had hoped to keep him in place. Without Edwards, club president Mike Gordon is expected to take on a greater day-to-day role in running Liverpool's football operations.
