Arsenal champions build for a title defense
Fresh off lifting the trophy, Arsenal open the defense of their crown against newly promoted Coventry City, with Mikel Arteta targeting a squad that can go the distance again.
Arsenal's players and staff marked the 2025–26 title with an open-top bus parade through north London, capping a campaign in which Arteta finally delivered the league crown that had eluded him across several near-misses. The celebrations were a chance to savor a long-awaited breakthrough before attention turned quickly to defending it.
That task now begins in earnest. Arsenal open their defense at home to Coventry City, back in the top flight for the first time in 25 years, on August 21 in the traditional Friday Night Football curtain-raiser — a fixture Arteta has already flagged as an early test of his squad's focus against a promoted side determined to make an impression.
Arteta has used the summer to reinforce the standards that underpinned the title win, stressing that complacency is the single biggest threat to a repeat. Preseason training has centered on sharpening the squad's game-management in tight matches, an area the manager felt cost Arsenal points in previous campaigns before last season's title-winning consistency.
For all the goodwill from May, Arteta has been careful to frame the new season as its own challenge. Defending a title, he has told his squad, requires the same hunger that won it in the first place — and Arsenal's pre-season has been built around proving that hunger hasn't faded.
