Boehly And Walter Sell Chelsea Stakes As Clearlake Takes Control

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter have sold their ownership interests in Chelsea to Clearlake Capital affiliates, giving the investment firm full control of the club. Hansjörg Wyss remains a stakeholder in the ownership group.

Clearlake completes ownership transition

Chelsea have confirmed that affiliates of Clearlake Capital have acquired the ownership interests held by Todd Boehly and Mark Walter.

The transaction gives Clearlake full control of Chelsea. Boehly will leave his position as chairman, ending a role he had held since the consortium’s 2022 purchase of the club from Roman Abramovich.

Clearlake is led by co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano. It previously held a 61.5% stake in Chelsea, while Boehly and Walter each held about 12.8%.

Wyss remains part of ownership group

The club’s official announcement states that Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss has **not** sold his interest and will remain an important stakeholder and partner in the ownership group.

That corrects the claim that Wyss was part of the sale. Chelsea has confirmed only that Clearlake acquired the stakes held by Boehly and Walter.

Boehly, Walter and Wyss joined forces with Clearlake in the consortium that bought Chelsea in 2022 for £2.3 billion. Abramovich’s sale followed sanctions imposed on him by the UK government in March 2022; he has denied having close links with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Boehly reflects on Chelsea tenure

Boehly said it had been an “honour” to serve as Chelsea chairman.

In a statement, he thanked people who had helped secure the club’s future, including the Premier League, Chelsea’s coaches, players, staff and supporters. He also said he valued his partnership with Clearlake and expressed confidence in the club’s future under its leadership.

The official statement did not set out the sale price or provide a detailed explanation for the ownership change. Reports before the announcement had indicated that negotiations followed a period of tension within the ownership group, with both sides at different times considering a buyout of the other.
