Rogers Inspires Stunning Chelsea Comeback To Beat Leeds 6-3
Morgan Rogers set up four goals from the bench as Xabi Alonso's Chelsea overturned a two-goal deficit to beat Leeds United 6-3 in a chaotic Carabao Cup third-round tie at Stamford Bridge.
Leeds Take A Two-Goal Lead After The Break
Tarik Muharemovic headed Leeds United in front in the 23rd minute at Stamford Bridge, rising at the back post from a corner after goalkeeper Mike Penders had made a fine double save moments earlier. Chelsea trailed 1-0 at half-time, having made nine changes from their weekend defeat to Arsenal, and fell further behind three minutes after the restart when Brenden Aaronson finished from close range to make it 2-0.
Four Half-Time Substitutions Change The Game
Xabi Alonso had already sent on Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Reece James at the interval, and those changes turned the match. Chelsea won a penalty in the 51st minute when Dan James fouled Pep Chavarria in the box, and Cole Palmer converted in the 53rd minute before adding a second, teed up by Rogers, two minutes later to make it 2-2. Pedro Neto put Chelsea ahead for the first time in the 60th minute, another goal created by Rogers, and Danny Welbeck extended the lead in the 65th minute after Rogers picked him out, capping a spell in which Chelsea scored three goals in 12 minutes.
Calvert-Lewin Pulls One Back Before Chelsea Pull Away
Dominic Calvert-Lewin reduced the deficit to 4-3 in the 75th minute, giving Leeds hope of an unlikely point, but Valentin Barco restored Chelsea's two-goal cushion in the 80th minute, scoring from yet another Rogers assist, his fourth of the match. Welbeck added his second and Chelsea's sixth in stoppage time to complete a 6-3 win that sends the Blues into the Carabao Cup fourth round.
