Real Madrid Come From 3-1 Down To Beat Roma
Real Madrid came from 3-1 down to beat Roma 4-3 at the Stadio Olimpico, scoring three times in the last seven minutes on Jose Mourinho's return to Rome.
Roma take control
Roma went ahead in the 20th minute when Marten de Roon's long-range shot deflected past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Kylian Mbappé levelled five minutes later with a shot that took a deflection on its way in.
Donyell Malen then scored twice in the early stages of the second half, the second goal standing after a VAR check, to make it 3-1 to the hosts. Mbappé had a goal ruled out for offside after the hour.
Real Madrid's late comeback
Mourinho made substitutions in the 59th minute, bringing on Endrick and Arda Güler. Both had a hand in the finish.
Carlos Espí pulled one back in the 83rd minute, scoring from a rebound after Roma goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini saved a header from Endrick. Endrick then headed in the equaliser in the 85th minute from a Güler corner. In the 90th minute, Antonio Rüdiger scored the winner, again from a Güler delivery.
Mourinho's return
The match brought Mourinho back to the Stadio Olimpico, this time as Real Madrid coach. He won the Conference League with Roma in 2022 and took the club to the 2023 Europa League final before leaving in January 2024. Roma supporters displayed banners in his honour before and during the game.
