Morocco suffer heartbreak again as Cameroon reach Wafcon final
Goalkeeper Michaely Bihina saved a 118th-minute penalty and three more in the shootout as Cameroon stunned hosts Morocco to reach the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations final, where they'll meet fairy-tale run Malawi.
Bihina's penalty heroics end Morocco's dream
Michaely Bihina was the heroine as the Cameroon goalkeeper saved a 118th-minute extra-time penalty from Fatima Tagnaout, then denied three more spot-kicks in the shootout, to send her side through to the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations final.
The 22-year-old's save from 12 yards ensured the game in Rabat finished 0-0 after 120 minutes. Bihina then excellently kept out efforts from Kenza Chapelle, Maryame Atiq and Sakina Ouzraoui to leave the Moulay Hassan Stadium in astonished silence. Teenage Cameroon defender Maryam Nyadjou held her nerve to convert the decisive kick and seal a 3-1 win on penalties for the Central Africans.
Malawi's fairy tale continues into the final
The Indomitable Lionesses will face Malawi in Sunday's final after the southern Africans beat Algeria 3-1 earlier on Wednesday. Malawi's Chawinga sisters were once again the stars of the show, sharing three goals as the Scorchers continued their remarkable run at the tournament.
Ranked 153rd in the world, Malawi have taken Wafcon by storm. Belying their status as the lowest-ranked side playing in Morocco, the southern Africans — making their Wafcon debut — were too strong for Algeria, having already defeated heavyweights Nigeria and Ghana on their way to the final.
An unlikely route to the final for Cameroon
Cameroon's run to the final is all the more extraordinary given they were knocked out during qualifying and only progressed to the finals on the strength of their world ranking, after the Confederation of African Football decided to expand the tournament to 16 teams midway through the preliminary process.
