Fernandes Fires United to First Win

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as Manchester United recovered from an early setback to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford.

Ipswich take early lead

Manchester United secured their first Premier League win of the season with a 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.

Ipswich struck first in the 29th minute when Leif Davis finished from Abdul Fatawu’s cross. The visitors had threatened in an open opening period, but United responded before half-time.

A slip from Marcelino Núñez allowed Matheus Cunha to lead a counter-attack, and Fernandes finished the move to bring United level. The sides went into the interval at 1-1.

United pull clear

United took the lead in the 56th minute when Jacob Greaves diverted Harry Maguire’s attempt into his own net. The goal stood after a VAR review.

Fernandes added his second from the penalty spot five minutes later after Greaves brought down Cunha in the area. The United captain completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute, converting from close range after efforts from Kobbie Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo were blocked.

Mbeumo seals emphatic win

Bryan Mbeumo added United’s fifth goal in the 82nd minute. Fernandes supplied the forward, who lifted his finish over goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen, with the ball going in off the crossbar.

Ipswich scored a stoppage-time consolation through Chuba Akpom, who converted Julio Enciso’s cross. It did not change the outcome as United claimed a convincing win after trailing in the first half.

The result followed United’s opening-day defeat at Hull City and gave Michael Carrick’s team its first three points of the league campaign.
