Brighton Crush 10-Man Villa
Brighton & Hove Albion began their Premier League campaign with a 4-0 win over Aston Villa after four first-half goals and João Gomes’ sending-off.
Brighton punish Villa early
Brighton & Hove Albion beat Aston Villa 4-0 at the Amex Stadium after a remarkable first-half performance.
Victor Lindelöf scored an own goal in the eighth minute after Maxim de Cuyper’s shot hit the post. De Cuyper then made it 2-0 10 minutes later, finishing Georginio Rutter’s cut-back from six yards.
Hinshelwood scores twice
Brighton were 3-0 ahead around the half-hour mark when De Cuyper’s cross was returned across goal by Diego Gómez and Jack Hinshelwood scored from close range.
Hinshelwood scored again a minute later after Yasin Ayari won possession from João Gomes inside the Villa box. Every goal in the match was scored before half-time.
Villa reduced to 10
Villa’s first half became worse when Gomes, already booked, was sent off after a VAR review for kicking out at Rutter.
Brighton did not add to their lead in the second half, but Villa could not reduce the deficit.
