Arsenal Agree £50m-Plus Deal To Sign Villa's Konsa

Arsenal have struck a £51m deal to bring in Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, with a medical set for this week.

Deal agreed

Arsenal have reached a £51m agreement, including add-ons, with Aston Villa to sign England defender Ezri Konsa.

Konsa is due to undergo a medical on Thursday, after which the move will be confirmed.

Injuries force Arsenal's hand

The move comes with Arsenal short at the back. William Saliba is facing several months out after a serious injury picked up at the 2026 World Cup, and Jurrien Timber's groin problem has resurfaced since the end of last season.

Manager Mikel Arteta had been pushing hard for reinforcements able to cover both centre-back and right-back, which is exactly where Konsa's versatility comes in.

Villa's asking price comes down

Villa had wanted closer to £60m for their defender earlier in the window, a figure Arsenal weren't prepared to match. Talks continued through the summer, with Arsenal reportedly weighing up Jarell Quansah as an alternative before ultimately pushing the Konsa deal over the line.

A key man for club and country

Konsa has been an ever-present for Unai Emery's side since arriving from Brentford in 2019, racking up 286 appearances, 12 goals and four assists across all competitions.

He played a central role in Villa's run to the Europa League title in 2025-26, starting ten of their matches in the competition including the final against SC Freiburg. He also started every one of England's eight matches at this summer's World Cup, and statistically was the hardest defender in the Premier League to dispossess in ground duels last season.

Squad depth concerns

Arsenal do have Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White able to fill in across the back four, but White has struggled with fitness over the past two seasons, and Mosquera was left exposed playing out of position in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, giving away a penalty in the process.

Signing Konsa would go a long way to solving that shortage of cover heading into a title defence.
