Arsenal started their Premier League title defence with a 3-0 victory over Coventry City as Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard scored at the Emirates Stadium.
Early goals put Arsenal in command
Arsenal opened their Premier League title defence with a controlled 3-0 win over Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.
Kai Havertz scored in the 15th minute before Bukayo Saka doubled the lead eight minutes later. Martin Ødegaard added Arsenal’s third four minutes after the restart as Mikel Arteta’s side secured a comfortable victory.
Havertz opens the scoring
Havertz was preferred up front and gave Arsenal the breakthrough after 15 minutes. Riccardo Calafiori delivered from the left, and the forward swept the ball home from inside the penalty area.
The early goal allowed Arsenal to play with greater control, while Coventry struggled to establish a sustained foothold in the match.
Saka punishes Coventry
Saka made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute. Christos Tzolis’ cross was parried by Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, but the rebound fell for Saka, who rolled the ball into an empty net.
Arsenal went into half-time with a two-goal lead and had limited Coventry’s ability to create clear opportunities.
Ødegaard completes the scoring
Ødegaard ended the contest as a competitive game in the 49th minute. The Arsenal captain’s scuffed effort bounced past Rushworth to give the champions a three-goal lead.
Arsenal remained in control for the rest of the evening, collecting a clean sheet and an assured opening-day win.
